Staining Decks, Docks, and Patios in St. Petersburg

Outdoor space is why people live in St. Petersburg, and decks, docks, and pool surrounds take the worst of the weather for it. Sun bakes the wood, salt air and spray settle on it, afternoon storms soak it, and humidity keeps it from ever fully drying. Wood that is not sealed and maintained here grays, checks, and softens fast. Here is how we plan for it.

Relentless sun

Ten months of strong UV break down clear and transparent stains quickly. We talk through pigment level with you rather than defaulting to the lightest finish, because more pigment means more UV protection.

Salt, humidity, and mildew

Boards near the bay or the Gulf collect salt and rarely dry out completely. We wash with a mildewcide, rinse salt off, let the wood dry, and use stains with mildew-resistant additives so growth does not come back in a season.

Pressure-treated pine and dock hardwoods

Most decks here are pressure-treated pine, with ipe and other hardwoods on docks and waterfront decks. Each takes stain differently, and new pressure-treated lumber needs time to dry before it will accept a finish.

Docks, pool decks, and lanais

Waterfront docks, pool surrounds, and screened lanais each have their own moisture and salt exposure. We match the product to the surface rather than using one stain for everything.

Deck staining calendar

Stain needs dry wood and a dry day or two after application, which makes the October through May dry season ideal in St. Petersburg. Summer staining is possible on stretches of clear mornings, but afternoon storms make scheduling tighter. Late fall and winter are the most popular times to get decks and docks ready for outdoor season.

What's Included in Every Deck Staining Project

  1. 1

    Free on-site estimate

We inspect the deck or dock, note loose boards, popped fasteners, or soft spots, talk through stain types and colors, and send a written quote that covers cleaning, prep, product, and cleanup.

  2. 2

    Cleaning or stripping

The wood is washed with a mildewcide cleaner and rinsed of salt to remove dirt, algae, and gray, weathered fiber. If an old failing stain needs to come off, it is stripped so the new coat bonds to sound wood.

  3. 3

    Sanding and repairs

Rough boards and railings are sanded smooth, popped fasteners are set, and any problem boards are pointed out to you before we stain.

  4. 4

    Stain application

Applied by brush, pad, or sprayer with back-brushing so the stain penetrates rather than sitting on top. Railings, spindles, and stair stringers are done by hand.

  5. 5

    Cure time and walk-through

We tell you how long to stay off the deck, and you walk the finished job with the crew lead before we leave.

What Affects the Cost of Staining a Deck in St. Petersburg

Every deck is quoted on its own, but a few things reliably move the number. Here is what we look at when we walk your project.

Deck or dock size

Square footage of the floor is the starting point. Multi-level decks, pool surrounds, and docks with finger piers add area and transitions.

Railings, spindles, and stairs

Vertical surfaces take longer than the floor because they are brushed by hand. A deck with a lot of spindles can have more railing work than floor work.

Current condition

A deck that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat is quick. Stripping a failed solid stain or heavy sanding of weathered boards adds labor.

Stain type

Transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stains cost different amounts per gallon and cover differently. We will explain the tradeoffs in appearance and lifespan.

Wood type and age

Pressure-treated pine, cedar, and hardwoods like ipe each absorb stain differently. Brand-new pressure-treated wood may need to season first.

Access and surroundings

Pool decks, screened enclosures, and waterfront docks need more masking and, sometimes, tide-aware scheduling.

St. Petersburg Deck Staining FAQs

How often should a deck be restained in St. Petersburg?

More often than up north, and more often near the water. Transparent and semi-transparent stains typically need a maintenance coat every one to two years in Florida sun, while solid stains last longer. Waterfront docks and full-sun pool decks need attention soonest. We will tell you what to expect for your deck and the stain you choose.

Can you stain a dock?

Yes. Docks take salt spray, tide moisture, and full sun, so we use products rated for marine exposure and schedule around tides. Hardwood docks like ipe need a penetrating oil finish rather than a film-forming stain.

Should I stain or paint my deck?

Stain, in almost every case. Stain penetrates the wood and wears gradually, so recoating is simple. Paint sits on top, traps humidity underneath, and peels. If your deck already has a solid stain or paint, we will talk through the best way to move forward.

Can you stain a brand-new deck?

Not right away. New pressure-treated lumber is shipped wet and needs several weeks to a few months to dry out before it will absorb stain, and coastal humidity slows that down. We can check the wood and tell you when it is ready.

What is the difference between transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stain?

Transparent stains show the most wood grain and offer the least UV protection. Semi-transparent adds color and protection while still showing grain. Solid stains look like paint, hide the grain completely, and last the longest. In Florida sun, most homeowners land on semi-transparent or solid.

How long before I can use the deck again?

Most stains are dry to walk on within 24 to 48 hours depending on humidity, and furniture can usually go back after that. We will give you the specific cure time for the product we used, and we schedule around the forecast so rain does not hit a fresh coat.
