Kitchens, refreshed

Refinishing Cabinets in South Bend Homes

A lot of South Bend and Mishawaka kitchens still have their original cabinets: solid oak, maple, or birch boxes from the 1960s through the 1990s that are structurally perfect and visually dated. Refinishing them costs a fraction of replacement, keeps good wood out of the landfill, and can be done without tearing your kitchen apart. Here is what makes cabinet work different from painting a wall.

Oak grain and older finishes

Oak has deep, open grain that shows through paint unless it is filled. Older varnish and lacquer finishes need thorough degreasing and sanding before a bonding primer will stick. We do not skip either step.

A sprayed, factory-like finish

Doors and drawer fronts are removed, labeled, and sprayed for a smooth, brush-mark-free finish. Cabinet boxes are sprayed or brushed in place inside a masked and ventilated work area.

Steam, grease, and daily use

Kitchens are the hardest-working room in the house. We use cabinet-grade enamels that cure hard, resist grease, and wipe clean, not standard wall paint.

Indoor, year-round work

Cabinet refinishing happens inside, so it is a good winter project in northern Indiana. Dry winter air helps enamel cure, and it fills the months when exterior work is off the table.

Cabinet refinishing schedule

Because the work is indoors, we refinish cabinets year-round. Late fall and winter are popular in South Bend because families want the kitchen done before the holidays or while nobody is grilling outside anyway. If you have a date in mind, reach out a few weeks ahead so we can hold the slot.

What's Included in Every Cabinet Refinishing Project

  1. 1

    Free estimate and color consult

We count doors and drawers, check the current finish and material, and talk through colors and sheens. You get a written quote that covers everything from prep to reinstall.

  2. 2

    Remove, label, and protect

Doors, drawer fronts, and hardware come off and are labeled so everything goes back where it belongs. Countertops, appliances, floors, and the rest of the kitchen are masked off.

  3. 3

    Degrease, sand, and prime

Every surface is cleaned, scuff-sanded, and coated with a bonding primer made for slick or previously finished wood. Oak grain is filled if you want a smooth look.

  4. 4

    Spray finish coats

Two coats of cabinet-grade enamel are sprayed for a smooth, even finish. Boxes are finished in place inside a contained work area.

  5. 5

    Reinstall and walk-through

Doors and drawers go back on, hinges are adjusted, and you inspect the finished kitchen with the crew lead before we pack up.

Straight talk on pricing

What Affects the Cost of Cabinet Refinishing in South Bend

Every kitchen is quoted on its own, but a few things consistently move the number. Knowing them ahead of time makes the estimate easier to read.

Door and drawer count

The number of doors, drawer fronts, and end panels is the biggest driver. A galley kitchen and a large L-shaped kitchen with an island are very different jobs.

Cabinet material

Oak needs grain filling for a smooth finish. Laminate and thermofoil need special primers. Maple and painted cabinets are the most straightforward.

Current finish

Lightly worn factory finishes prep quickly. Heavy grease buildup, peeling paint, or a previous DIY job takes more sanding and stripping.

Color choice

Going from dark stain to white or a light color takes more coats to cover cleanly than a mid-tone.

Extras

Islands, pantries, bathroom vanities, and built-ins can be added to the same project, usually for less than doing them separately.

Hardware and hinges

Reusing existing hardware is simplest. New pulls or hinges with different hole spacing add filling and drilling.

Good to know

South Bend Cabinet Refinishing FAQs

Is refinishing really cheaper than replacing my cabinets?

Substantially. Refinishing uses your existing boxes and doors, so there is no demolition, no new cabinetry, and no countertop or plumbing disruption. If your cabinets are solid and the layout works, refinishing is usually the best value in a kitchen update.

Can you paint oak cabinets so the grain does not show?

Yes. Oak's open grain will show through paint unless it is filled first. We can fill the grain for a smooth, modern look, or leave a light texture if you prefer some character. We will show you both on a sample door.

Do you spray or brush the cabinets?

Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed for a smooth, factory-like finish. Cabinet boxes are sprayed in place where possible inside a masked work area, or brushed and rolled with fine-finish tools where spraying is not practical.

Can I use my kitchen during the project?

Mostly, yes. Appliances and the sink stay accessible. Doors and drawer fronts are off for the duration, so plan for open shelving for a few days. We will give you a schedule at the estimate.

How long will the finish last?

A properly prepped and sprayed cabinet enamel holds up for many years of daily use. The keys are thorough degreasing, a bonding primer, and letting the finish fully cure before heavy use. We will tell you how to care for it.

Can you refinish laminate or thermofoil cabinets?

Often, yes. Laminate needs a specialty bonding primer and thermofoil needs to be firmly attached with no peeling. We will check the condition at the estimate and tell you honestly whether refinishing is a good idea.
